Standard Patent Glazing history

Established in 1902 by Henry Richardson, Fredrick Bottomley, and Joseph Rouse Schofield, our pioneering work began with lead-covered patent glazing bars, famously used to re-glaze the central transept of the Crystal Palace. Today, we continue their legacy of excellence.

1910s – Pioneering Invention 

We launched our groundbreaking invention, transforming the use of glass ‘stops’ in glazing bar fabrication. Our patented design streamlines glass removal and insertion while preventing damage to the external lead extrusion that protects the internal mild steel core.

1930’s – Local Job Growth: Expansion of our Production Capacity

Rising demand drives The Standard Patent Glazing Co Ltd to greatly expand its production capacity. This growth leads to significant increase in the workforce, creating job opportunities for skilled workers across multiple disciplines in the Dewsbury area

1950s - history timeline

1950’s – Patenting of our Inaugural Double Glazing Systems

A defining moment in our company’s history comes in 1950 with the patenting of our first double glazing system. This achievement showcases our innovative approach to addressing the increasing need for thermal efficiency in architectural design.

1980s – Formation of New Board and Milestone Achievement

In 1980, the newly appointed board set the stage for substantial growth, driving the company to achieve multi-million-pound annual revenues. This steady financial expansion continued throughout the decade, reflecting the success of strategic initiatives and sustainable business development

2000s – Major Railway Projects and Industry Leadership 

Since the early 2000s, we’ve delivered daylighting solutions for major UK railway stations including York, Darlington, Hull Paragon, Chester and London Victoria. As patent glazing specialists, we helped shape the British Standard for vertical and sloping glazing (BS5516:2004). Our commitment to quality was recognised with ISO 9001 in 2007, followed by ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 for environmental and health & safety management.

2020s – Resilience and Innovation

In 2020, we successfully navigated the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, emerging stronger than ever. Despite the obstacles, we continued to expand and innovate, introducing new products and fully digitalising our operations in line with the industry 4.0 framework. Our commitment to progress has been reinforced by significant investments in technology and infrastructure.
