New Mono-pitched Roof Glazing to multi-functional Extension
Project Overview
Standard Patent Glazing Co Ltd was appointed to design, supply and install a bespoke mono-pitched roof glazing scheme for a high-end domestic extension in Oxford. The client’s brief was clear: create a light-filled multi-functional space with a bold architectural roofline, while ensuring the glazing integrated seamlessly with the internal timber structure and the overall aesthetic of the home. To achieve this, we selected our proprietary Rafterline patent glazing system, combining exposed internal timber rafters with a slim, durable external glazing solution that delivers both performance and visual impact.
Our Solution – Rafterline Patent Glazing System
- Integrated mono-pitch roof glazing The Rafterline system was used to form approximately 25m² of mono-pitched roof glazing, sitting directly over the new multi-functional extension. The design allows the internal timber rafters to remain visible, with the external aluminium cappings providing a clean, contemporary finish.
- Thermally efficient double glazingWe incorporated double-glazed units carefully specified to meet the thermal requirements of a modern, highly insulated domestic extension. This ensured:
- Excellent daylight levels for the living areas.
- Improved thermal performance, supporting energy efficiency and comfort.
- Coordinated vertical glazingIn addition to the roof glazing, Standard Patent Glazing Co Ltd also supplied complementary vertical glazing. These elements were designed so that the roof and vertical glazing marry perfectly, aligning mullions and sightlines to create a coherent and continuous glass envelope.
Design Considerations
Key priorities for the project included:
- Maximising natural light
The mono-pitched roof orientation and glazing layout were refined to bring even daylight deep into the space, reducing reliance on artificial lighting. - Balancing performance and aesthetics
The Rafterline system allowed the architect’s vision for exposed internal timber rafters to be realised, while delivering a robust, weather-tight and thermally efficient external glazing solution. - High-quality detailing
Careful coordination between our design team, the architect and main contractor ensured junctions with the existing building, wall abutments and vertical glazing were clean, discreet and durable.
Expert Delivery
From initial design discussions through to final installation, the project was delivered by our directly employed in-house team:
- Our designers produced detailed drawings and setting-out information to ensure the Rafterline system aligned perfectly with the timber structure.
- Our installation team worked closely with the main contractor to sequence the works efficiently and protect the high-quality finishes of the new extension.
The result is an extension that feels open, bright and contemporary, with a bold glazed roofline that enhances both the interior experience and the external appearance of the property.
Testimonial ~ Homeowner, Oxford
We wanted our new multi-functional extension to feel bright and special, not just another room tacked onto the house. Standard Patent Glazing really helped us achieve that. The Rafterline roof glazing looks fantastic – the exposed timber rafters inside give the space real character, and the amount of natural light is incredible without the room feeling cold or uncomfortable. The vertical glazing ties in seamlessly with the roof, so everything feels like one coherent design rather than separate elements. From the first design discussions through to installation, the team were professional, organised and clearly very experienced. The finished result has completely transformed how we use the house, and we’re absolutely delighted with it.
