Our Skyline Box range of glazing bars offer an economical roof glazing solution when compared with curtain walling roofing systems. The glazing bar's strength is provided by an internal box section. The glazing bar is weathered by a screw on pressure cap (PC1) with a choice of plain (PC2) or ornate (PC3) cosmetic outer snap-on cappings to conceal all fixing screws.

When used with high performance double glazing units with warm edge spacer bars and argon gas filling this system can achieve an overall U Value of 1.4W/ m²K to comply with Building Regulation Document L.

Our Skyline range of glazing bars offer an economical roof glazing solution incorporating slim sightlines. The glazing bar's strength is provided by an internal stalk (or fin) which is cut away at the top and bottom main fixing positions.
An internal snap-on ornate capping system (PC4) is also available if desired to fully conceal the internal stalk giving the appearance of a feature timber rafter.

When used with high performance double glazing units with warm edge spacer bars and argon gas filling this system can achieve an overall U Value of 1.4W/ m²K to comply with Building Regulation Document L.

Timber rafters (supplied by the builder or joinery sub-contractor) will create an appealing visual effect inside any home and are totally protected from the effects of weathering by our externally clad Rafterline Patent Glazing system.
Due to the pleasing aesthetics of aluminium and timber materials our Rafterline system is the most popular specifiers choice for domestic projects.

When used with double glazing and thermal breaks this system is easily capable of providing an overall U Value of 1.6W/ m²K to comply with Building Regulation Document L.

Our Traditional patent glazing system remains our customers most popular choice for use on unheated spaces such as Railway Stations, glazed canopies and covered ways where thermal properties are not a consideration.
This system has been installed on thousands of projects nationwide and is available with a choice of capping systems to suit your needs.
A truly great glazing system combined with economy and a proven track record. 30,000m² of this glazing system has been installed by us on many major railway stations throughout the UK in recent times.

This system is capable of accommodating solid or multi-wall polycarbonate sheets or double glazed units up to 28mm thick if used on unheated spaces or where compliance with Building Regulations Document L are not a consideration.

Our 'Heritage' Patent Glazing Bar range is truly unique amongst roof glazing systems; there are no alternative products available on the market which can match an original lead covered steel patent glazing bar which originates from the Victorian era. This range has been manufactured by us unaltered for over a century and is the perfect product for listed buildings and for use in the refurbishment of significant and historic buildings. This system is also still very popular for new build projects and should not to be overlooked on today's modern buildings where a unique character look is desired.

The position and orientation of the glazing combined with the glazed infill material govern the build up of solar heat in a building. Intelligent positioning of the patent glazing may enable the designer to maximise the beneficial winter solar heat whilst controlling the sometimes overpowering summer solar heat.
Heat gain can be reduced further by introducing ventilation into the patent glazing. Read on for more info.....

Let there be light

Solar Heat Gain is mainly a positive effect associated with your roof glazing. All year round our patent glazing systems will allow free light and heat to enter into your building or home. The sun's natural rays of light will improve the quality of your working and living area as well as lower your central heating bills during the daylight hours.
For the three summer months of the year (if we are lucky) the solar heat and light entering into your space may not be as welcome as the other nine months certainly are. There are various options for reducing this unwanted heat source and glare by means of using solar control glass and solar shading devices.

Here comes the sun!

Heat and Glare Reduction
Depending on the positioning of the roof glazing glare may become an issue. There are many solar control glasses available that can significantly reduce solar heat and also light transmission values but glare is still a difficult problem to solve by glass choice alone. On south facing roof glazing, to totally eliminate glare you must eliminate the vast majority of light passing through the glass.

The designers of large factories and mills in the 19th and 20th centuries were aware of the need of free light during daylight hours to lower the need of artificial lighting. Glare would also be a problem if the factory workers were exposed to this. Northlights became the best solution. Large areas of glazing were introduced into buildings which were not subjected to the intense power of the sun. They were positioned to face in a northerly direction and had a steep pitch of usually 60°.

Inelligent positioning of your roof glazing is the first priority for new build projects. If your roof glazing is planned to be south facing then we recommend using a high performance solar control glass that reduces heat and light transmission or to incorporate internal blinds that can be used when the sun is too overbearing.

If you do not wish to use blinds on south facing designs then your glass choice should be considered carefully. We would recommend using a high perfomance solar control glass that blocks at least 50% of light from entering the building. Please note that glare will still be an issue at certain times.

Pilkington Blue Self Cleaning solar body contol body tinted glass significantly reduces solar heat gain and has the added advantage of a self cleaning finish

High Performance Sunguard Super Neutral solar control glass is available in several formats which significantly reduce solar heat gain whilst still maintaining relatively high levels of light transmssion.

Solar Shading Devices/Blinds/Louvres

Internal Blinds
The advantage of using internal blinds are that they only need to be used when you really require them. A high level light transmission glass can be installed to south facing glazing with all the benefits that are associated with it and the blinds can be used only when required during the year.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Close fitting Blinds must NEVER we installed underneath roof glazing if the inner pane of glass is a LAMINATED type. You must always use a toughened glass or a special (and significantly more expensive) heat strengthened laminated composite to prevent the high possibility of thermal fracturing occuring to the laminated pane. We have also regularly applied a factory fitted anti-shatter film to toughened glass for use in schools where blinds will be used in close proximity to the glazing and where toughened glass is not desired as an inner pane.

If you do not wish to use blinds on south facing designs then your glass choice should be considered carefully. We would recommend using a high perfomance solar control glass that blocks at least 50% of light from entering the building. Please note that glare will still be an issue at certain times of the year.

External Blinds/Louvres
We have carried out several projects where external blinds/louvres have been installed directly onto the outside of our roof patent glazing systems. This option is usually reserved for high end projects on museums and art galleries where the blinds/louvres are electrcially controlled and programmed to open/close depending on the suns positions and brightness. Please contact us for further details regarding our requirements for this option.

No sun today thank you! - Blinds can really help sometimes

Due to the many types of blinds avialable on the market we do not offer these items as part of our service as the client can usually easily add these to the roof glazing after completion of our works and have full control over the design, material and price range
.

Ventilation
Solar heat gain can be somewhat alleviated by the use of ventilation within the roof glazing system. We can incorporate thermally broken aluminium framed opening vents as well as a single glazed type to enable air flow within your room.

This is not a one step cure and would only help to maintain an internal temperature similar to the external temperature within your room if the roof glazing is exposed to direct sunlight.

It is recommended that ventilation combined with the use of solar control glass and/or solar shading devices will always provide the best results in creating a comfortable internal environment for the building user.

All of our patent glazing systems can incorporate opening vents to provide day-to-day ventilation.
